Program Objectives

  • Expand students’ knowledge of global health and community health issues
  • Provide students with access to global health expertise in our communities who will act as mentors
  • Encourage students to add an international focus in their studies
  • Help students appreciate the benefits of multi-cultural research and solutions
  • Allow students to gain a multi-cultural perspective of their research by communicating with same age school children in middle and lower income countries around the world

Program
Research will be conducted by a student team on a global health issue and its application in a couple of middle or lower income countries around the world. Global health issues for this program range from clean, safe drinking water and renewable energy to preventative health care and infectious disease control. Student teams will communicate with each other, their teachers, and their mentors and will complete their global health studies with presentations of their creative projects. A final competition of all the top resentations will take place at the end of the semester.

Plans
The Global Health Connections (GHC) program is entering its fourth year. In 2004, 10 schools, 32 teachers, and over 2250 students participated. The fast growth of the GHC program is due to its popularity with students and teachers and through the efforts of our partnering organizations.

GHC is expanding throught the United States and internationally. We wil set up commmunications so that our student teams can work on their projects with similar age students in middle and lower income countries.

Participants
Students will develop health outreach projects that focus on a community health need in a middle or lower income nation.

Teachers will oversee the project teams and international school partnerships, as well as facilitate studetns' learning of important global health concerns.

Community health and energy professionals will serve as mentors to foster students; understanding of scientific research design, provide local support and partnership processes for health and alternative energy issues, as well as the necassry infrastructure that must be coordinated to impact community health.

Rotary Clubs will develop local school participation and international school partnerships, provide competition judges, and raise funds for the GHC program.
